Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC): A Guide to Studying in China
Published on · China
China has become one of the main study destinations for African and Arab students. The China Scholarship Council (CSC) funds thousands of foreign students every year, including Moroccans, for bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies.
Types of scholarships
Two routes are generally distinguished: a bilateral route managed through embassies and governments, and a "universities" route in which Chinese institutions put forward their own candidates. A full scholarship covers tuition fees, university housing, a monthly allowance and medical insurance. The details are set every year.
The application
The application is made online through the programme's information system, selecting one or more universities and a programme. The file includes the form, a letter or study plan, diplomas and transcripts, a language certificate, a medical certificate and recommendation letters. For a master's or doctorate, prior contact with a host professor clearly increases your chances.
Language
Programmes exist in Chinese and, increasingly, in English. For programmes in Chinese, an HSK level is required depending on the discipline; some courses include a preparatory language year. For English, a recognised test or a degree taught in English is requested.
The calendar
Applications generally open at the start of the calendar year and close in spring for an autumn start. Universities sometimes set their own dates: see the opportunity page for the year's calendar.
Life on the ground
Campuses are modern, university housing is affordable and the cost of living varies strongly by city. Adapting to the language, food and climate takes preparation. Universities' international offices support new arrivals.
Advice
- Check the recognition of the chosen university's degree and its ranking in your discipline.
- Prepare the medical certificate and official documents in advance.
- Avoid paid intermediaries: submission is free through official channels.
