MEXT Scholarship of the Japanese Government: A Guide for Moroccan Candidates

Published on · Japan

The Japanese government scholarship, known as MEXT, funds study or research in Japan for foreign students. It covers in principle tuition fees, a monthly allowance and a flight ticket, and extends to several categories: research students, undergraduates, technical colleges and specialised training.

Two application routes

The embassy route

The candidate submits their file to the Embassy of Japan in their country. After a preliminary selection on file, written tests (language, mathematics or science depending on the category) and an interview decide between candidates. Selected files are forwarded to the Japanese ministry. This route follows a fairly tight annual calendar, generally in spring for a departure the following year.

The university route

Some Japanese universities themselves recommend their candidates for programmes aimed at foreign students. You must then contact the institution and respect its deadlines.

The file

  • Application form and detailed study or research plan.
  • Transcripts and diplomas, with a translation if requested.
  • Academic recommendation letters.
  • Medical certificate.
  • For research students, a precise project and, if possible, contact with a host professor.

A precise study plan

The committee appreciates realistic, well-documented projects connected to the possible contribution to Morocco. Cite laboratories, methods, expected results. A vague plan is the first cause of elimination.

Language

Many research programmes take place in English, but a preparatory year in Japanese is often offered to scholarship holders. Starting to learn Japanese before arrival is a real asset.

Budget and life in Japan

The scholarship covers the essentials, but the cost of living varies strongly between Tokyo and provincial cities. Housing and insurance are to be arranged with the host university.

Advice

  • Find out early from the embassy: the tests take place shortly after submission.
  • Prepare the exam subjects with past papers.
  • Practise presenting your project clearly and concisely.
