Scholarship Rejected: Understanding the Setback, Bouncing Back and Finding Alternatives
Published on
Almost all scholarship holders experienced a rejection before succeeding. Excellence scholarships select a small fraction of applicants, often on tiny margins. What matters is how you react: analyse, adjust, try again.
Understanding why
Many organisations do not give detailed feedback, but some agree to provide it on request. Ask politely: "Could you share any elements that would help me improve my next application?" Failing that, reread your file with a critical eye: was the project precise enough? Were the references strong? Are the qualities requested demonstrated by facts? Did the file properly meet the criteria?
The most common causes
- A vague or overly general project, with no clear link to the country of origin.
- Generic essays, reused from one application to another.
- References with little detail.
- Insufficient professional or leadership experience for programmes that require it.
- Formal errors or an application submitted too late.
What to do now
- Apply for other scholarships: keep a table and diversify: national scholarships, university scholarships, foundation scholarships.
- Strengthen the file: an internship, an association project, a publication, a language certification.
- Reapply next year if the programme allows it and if your profile has evolved.
- Look for mixed funding: a partial scholarship, an assistantship, an honour loan, savings.
- Consider another path: start the master's in Morocco and apply for a doctorate, or aim for a one-semester exchange.
Build a plan B from the start
When you prepare an application, plan an alternative from the outset: a second scholarship, a less expensive programme, another country. This reduces the pressure and improves the quality of the main application.
