2026 Islamic Studies Research Grants: Applications Open Until 15 October

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, together with the UMIFRE network (joint units of French research institutes abroad), supports early-career research in Islamic studies through fieldwork grants.

Amounts and durations

  • Master 2: a stay of 1 to 3 months, €1,000 per month
  • Doctoral candidates and recent PhDs: a 6-month stay, €1,700 per month

Recipients are hosted at one or two institutes of the network, including the Jacques Berque Centre (Rabat), IFPO, IRMC or CEDEJ, and join the host institute's research team.

Who can apply

Islamic studies is understood broadly: archaeology and Islamic art, the history of Islam, the study of religious and legal texts, philology, or the social sciences of Muslim groups. Applicants must be enrolled in a Master 2 or a doctorate at a French university (or in joint supervision), or have defended their thesis after 31 December 2021 while residing in France.
