Studying in the United Kingdom: Scholarships, Admissions and Advice for Moroccans

Published on · United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has some of the most renowned universities in the world. Master's degrees there are short (most often one year), which appeals to profiles in a hurry to enter working life. In return, tuition fees for international students are high: finding funding is therefore central to the project.

Understanding the British system

Bachelor's degrees generally last three years (four in Scotland) and master's degrees one year. Bachelor's applications go through the UCAS platform; for a master's, you apply directly to the university through its portal. Deadlines vary: some very popular programmes close early, sometimes as early as autumn for the following intake.

The main scholarships

  • Chevening: a British government scholarship for a one-year master's, highly selective, requiring professional experience.
  • Gates Cambridge: full funding at the University of Cambridge for international master's and doctoral students.
  • Clarendon Fund: excellence scholarships at the University of Oxford.
  • University and department scholarships: many universities offer merit-based aid to international students, with their own deadlines.
  • Foundations and organisations: some foundations support specific profiles (women in science, health, engineering).

Note: the Commonwealth scholarships programme concerns member countries of the Commonwealth; Morocco is not one of them, so always check eligibility before applying.

English level

Most universities require a recognised test (most often IELTS Academic) with a minimum overall score and a minimum score per skill. Some accept other tests or degrees taught in English. Aim for a score comfortably above the minimum, because a single weak sub-score can block admission.

The student visa

For a programme of more than six months, a "Student" visa is required. It requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issued by the university, proof of funds and a specific health charge. Rules change: check the official UK government website when you apply.

The budget

Tuition fees vary considerably by discipline and university. On top of this comes a high cost of living, especially in London. Build a realistic budget including housing, transport, insurance and day-to-day expenses, and compare more affordable university towns.

Making your application succeed

  • Write a "personal statement" centred on your motivation, skills and project, without copying a template.
  • Obtain strong academic references.
  • Anticipate official documents: transcripts, diplomas, any translations.
  • Apply early: some programmes fill their places on a first-come basis.
