Studying in Spain: AECID Scholarships, Admissions and Student Life for Moroccans

Published on · Spain

Spain, Morocco's immediate neighbour, offers quality higher education at costs generally more moderate than other European countries. Cooperation between the two states is reflected in scholarship programmes and numerous university links.

The Spanish system

Studies follow the grado (four-year bachelor's), máster (one to two years) and doctorado pattern. Public universities are numerous and increasingly offer master's programmes in English. Spanish nevertheless remains the language of most programmes: a B2 level (DELE diploma or equivalent) is often required.

Scholarships accessible to Moroccans

  • MAEC-AECID scholarships: the Spanish International Cooperation Agency offers scholarships for master's and doctoral studies, including the Master Africa-Med programme aimed at students from the southern shore of the Mediterranean.
  • University and foundation scholarships: several public universities and foundations fund international students on academic criteria.
  • European mobility programmes: for students enrolled at partner Moroccan universities.

The admission procedure

The procedure depends on the level. For a grado, non-European students go through a national access process (UNEDasiss) that assesses their baccalaureate results. For a master's or doctorate, you apply directly to the university with diplomas, transcripts, a motivation letter and, in some cases, a language certificate. Moroccan diplomas must be legalised; homologation may be necessary to continue in certain regulated fields.

The visa

A study visa is required for a stay of more than three months. It requires the admission certificate, health insurance, proof of resources and a criminal record extract. Book an appointment at the consulate as soon as you are admitted, because waiting times vary.

Budget and daily life

Madrid and Barcelona are the most expensive cities; others such as Valencia, Granada or Salamanca offer excellent value for money. Shared housing is the most common arrangement. Also count health insurance, transport and registration fees.

Advice

  • Start Spanish early: even for a master's in English, daily life requires solid basics.
  • Have your diplomas legalised and translated before the summer of the start of the academic year.
  • Follow AECID calls: the calendars are annual and fairly short.
