Stipendium Hungaricum: Studying in Hungary with a Government Scholarship

Published on · Hungary

Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian government's scholarship programme for students from partner countries. It targets bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, at Hungarian universities that offer many programmes in English. Moroccans are among the eligible countries.

What the scholarship covers

The scholarship covers tuition fees and grants a monthly allowance, a housing contribution and health coverage, according to the rules of the year's programme. Precise amounts change: see the official page and the opportunity page.

Common conditions

  • Be a national of a partner country and not reside in Hungary.
  • Meet the entry requirements for the targeted level (secondary or university diploma).
  • Prove the language level of the programme (generally English).
  • Apply by the deadline, through the official platform.

How to apply

The file is submitted online on the programme platform, selecting several programmes and universities. It includes the application form, a CV, a motivation letter, diplomas and transcripts, a medical certificate, references and proof of language. Some documents must then be sent by post or through the national partner body. The year's applications generally open in early winter and close in January: check the calendar.

Choosing your programmes

Study the content, career prospects and admission conditions specific to each university. Programmes in medicine or art may have specific criteria (tests or a portfolio). Rank your choices according to your professional project, not just according to the city.

Life in Hungary

Budapest is a dynamic student city, with a cost of living more moderate than in Western Europe. Other university cities (Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs) are even more affordable. A student residence permit is issued after arrival.

Advice

  • Prepare documents to be translated and legalised early.
  • Write a letter specific to each programme.
  • Keep copies of everything you send and follow the platform's messaging.
