Student Visa: Documents and Advice Common to Most Countries

Published on

Each country sets its own visa rules, but the logic is the same everywhere: prove that you are admitted, that you can fund your stay and that you will leave at the end of your studies. Rules change: always check the official website of the consulate or embassy when you apply.

The most common documents

  • A passport valid beyond the length of the stay.
  • Admission letter or enrolment certificate from the institution.
  • Proof of resources: scholarship, bank statements, a parent's guarantee with their income.
  • Proof of accommodation: residence booking, lease or housing certificate.
  • Health insurance covering the length of the stay.
  • Compliant ID photos, application form, visa fee.
  • Criminal record extract and sometimes a medical certificate.
  • Previous diplomas, legalised or translated depending on the country.

A calendar to anticipate

Processing times range from a few weeks to several months. Consular appointments are sometimes scarce around the start of the academic year. Start the process as soon as you have your admission and gather the documents before the slots open.

The consular interview

Some countries summon the applicant. Be ready to explain your study project, the choice of programme, the funding and your plans for returning. Answers that are consistent with the file and not exaggerated are the best strategy. Bring the originals of your documents.

The financial file

The amount required depends on the country and the duration. If you have a scholarship, attach the official certificate: it is often enough. Otherwise, prepare consistent bank statements over several months; a large last-minute transfer raises suspicion.

Common mistakes

  • Using an outdated form or fees found on an unofficial website.
  • Forgetting a document or sending an illegible scan.
  • Not having a required document translated.
  • Booking a non-refundable ticket before having the visa.

Once you have it

Check the validity dates, the entry conditions and the procedures on arrival (registration with the municipality, residence permit, opening a bank account). Keep digital copies of all your documents.
